Hello everyone!

I have an ongoing blog with my 5th graders (Have Fun with English!) and another for 7th graders (3rd year EFL) from last year (Let's blog!) where I still post now and then. The URLs are included in the Participants' blogs area.
I think blogs are a simple way to get students writing and practicing what they learn. They can also be used as a two-way extension of the classroom. An added attraction is the wider readership.
I hope you participate actively our BaW blog and include reflections about blogging.

This Blog looks really nice! . I'm looking forward to starting my own, although still trying to find out where I can find one that goesinside my homepage and not as a detached one!
Anyway, we're all learning a great deal at BAW workshop, so it's being a fantastic experience!! Congratulations to our moderators!

Hi, this looks great. Just a few questions: What is the difference between blogs and wikis? I have used something called Wiki which was , I think at least, mostly for collaborative writing purposes. I thought that blogs were almost the same, but once in here it looks more like a guest book.

Discovering blogs...I want to visit all those BaW colleagues have created in order to understand how they work and how they can be used with students.
The synchronous activities were interesting. Mike's voice wasn't as clear than in other activities meanwhile voice of other participants was clear
I have experienced a problem with the identification of each of us in Yahoo and TI: it's really hard to determine who is "speaking". In YM, I added each participant with first name + name + (name of the country) and it was easier to follow the textchat. In TI, it's more complicated because most Yahoo IDs are different in TI IDs.

I used to have my composition students keep journals as a way to (a) encourage free writing and experimentation and (b) as a way to develop vocabulary very consciously. They had to write a short paragraph using a new vocabulary word from anywhere, e.g., their major. But lugging those journals home !
Well, blogs could be used for both these activities, and I wouldn't have to carry the notebooks around with me--nor would they.
Yeah, Smilies are cool.
Cheers--Elizabeth

I use blogs extensively with my students at Petroleum Institute in Abu Dhabi. Each of my students is required to have and maintain one. I link from my blogs and web pages to my students' blogs. For example:

http://vance-pi.blogspot.com/

For my courses just completed, portals linking to their blogs:
http://www.homestead.com/prosites-vstevens/files/pi/computing2/32B/032b_students.htm
http://www.homestead.com/prosites-vstevens/files/pi/computing2/32C/032c_students.htm
http://www.homestead.com/prosites-vstevens/files/pi/comp082/82A/082a_students.htm
http://www.homestead.com/prosites-vstevens/files/pi/comp082/82A/082b_students.htm

And my own personal blog which, if you go into the archives, has ESL links
http://vancestevens.blogspot.com/

I like this bravenet blog because it allows postings. Must see how it is set up!

I have been experimenting with blogs, lately, and found them very useful to blend or integrate with students' web projects. My students like them and also found them easy and simple to create. I used them in many ways with both my Remedial General English classes and ESP, English for Science classes. For instance,in my GE classes, each student is required to create a blog to publish his/her paragraph or essay writing assignments. For this purpose, we use blogs by Tripod.com, because they are very similar to Bravenet blogs in that they both allow postings, where I can check students' postings and leave post my comments on each blog, easily. You are welcome to have a look at one example of this kind of students' project here:
http://alothman-b.tripod.com/new-studs-m-03.htm
For my ESP class, I use blogs in various ways. For writing assignments, I created a Tripod.com blog where my students could post their writings and I can post my comments. As for their final term paper, each student was asked to create a blogger.com blog to use as their notebook where they could outline their topic and gather material to use as resources for their final project. Please have a look at last semester's:
http://alothman-b.tripod.com/162-53_blogs.htm
As you can see, blogs are flexible, cool tools that can provide a lot of space for creativity, for both teachers and students.
I created, earlier,an online handout on blogs and ways to use them for a workshop designed for colleagues at our English Unit of the Faculty of Science; you could have a look here:
http://alothman-b.tripod.com/call_workshop_handout.htm

I like this new Bravenet blog and plan to use it this Spring semester. Thanks to BaW moderators for introducing it to use.

Oops, I wonder if there is a way one could edit a post on this blog. Actually, blogs by Tripod.com, allows you to do so. Well I just wanted to correct the last sentence of my previous post; it shoudl read: "Thanks to BaW moderators for introdcing Bravenet blog to us" and not "use". Also I forgot to add the URL of my ESP class homework assignemts, so here is the URL:
http://alothman-b.tripod.com/writing162/

I use a blog to keep a record of some of the activities I do with my English classes for young learners. I hope it will be useful for other teachers looking for activities and/or story books.

It's called Teaching English With Picture Books

this is the first blog of my life - I wonder what miracle are waiting for me...

One bloggish comment (the online branch of my learner diary): yesterdays tour of TI with Bee was great. I was absolutely impressed with how Bee managed to navigate us around TI with only a text chat. Terrific!

See you soon

Hello Kyi, good to see you here in the shared BaW blog, too. I wonder why your URLs are gone? And I see that there'sw no link in the Blog list for my good old blog at Xanga. Did you use Xanga for setting up your blog? Please share your personal blog URL with us some time soon.

Hi, BAW members,

Thank you, Dafne, for posting to esl_efl_blogs@yahoogroups.com that you have started this weblog. It's a wonderful way to learn about bravenet weblogs. I started a blogger weblog last summer, but I didn't really have a purpose for it. Now I have gotten so many new ideas.

The educational, personal uses of blogs are fascinating. All teachers and students need some quiet place like this to unwind and share with others. Classrooms are so often like a public stage. It's funny how they're both public and private-feeling at the same time.
